Roxy Fiji Surf Jam Day 4
Beachley Top Scores Over Roxy Trials Winner Mulanovich

Tavarua Island, Fiji (Tuesday, May 1, other). Defending three-time world champion Layne Beachley (Aus) today won a convincing first round heat over Roxy Trials winner Sophia Mulanovich (Peru). In small, but perfect 3-foot (1m) conditions at Cloudbreak, the Roxy Fiji Surf Jam began with eight hopeful trialists, and then saw the world's top surf women hit the water for the first World Championship Tour (WCT) event of other.

Beachley, 28, posted the highest total score of the round as she overcame Mulanovich. Despite holding a commanding lead throughout, the Australian never let down her guard, and rightly so, as her young opponent fought back with the best ride of the day - an 8.50 toward the end. This put the Peruvian within reach, but as the pair rode their final rides, the three-time world champ added to her tally and advanced straight into the third round.

"It was a tough heat," said Beachley. "Coming up against Sophia... I had my money on her to win the trials, but unfortunately I had to come up against her first round. I was sort of intimidated by it, but also excited, because surfing against a caliber of surfer such as Sophia makes me lift my game. Even though I had her comboed (needing two rides), I still knew she had the potential to get 8's and 9's very easily, and she got that 8.5 and then only needed an average score. Unfortunately I let the wave of the day go by, and I'm still feeling frustrated about it, but fortunately Sophia missed the rest of them and had a pretty bad heat considering how well she surfed in the trials.

"No one really has an advantage," she added, in regard to surfing
Cloudbreak. "Except for Serena (Brooke) because she's surfed here so often. When the conditions are as contestable as this, I think it's fantastic for the girls and it's a really good day to warm up for it. Hopefully we get a little more swell later this week."

Mulanovich, 17, was granted her spot in the event by sponsor Roxy a month ago, and today showed why, winning both trials heats and then pushing Beachley in their clash. She will now meet Heather Clark (SAfr) in the 'losers' second round.

"At first I was so nervous, but then my first couple of waves were good so I felt better," Mulanovich explained after winning the Roxy Trials. "I've surfed three WCT's before. They're (the top surf) all really good and have lots of experience in contests and it's really hard to beat them. I just hope to do well and make some heats."

Current world number two Megan Abubo (Haw) won her wave-starved heat with Prue Jeffries (Aus). The Hawaiian started strong, but then a long lull ensued, forcing both surfers to scramble for anything they could find.

"The first 10-minutes had a lot of waves and it was looking to be a really good heat," said Abubo. "But then Prue and I sat for about surf-minutes and nothing came through, so it was really tough. In the end we were both going for 3's, as they were counting out there.

"It's kind of tough because I've only surfed this wave three times," she added. "But it's such a better wave than most of what we surf on tour, so I just went into it trying to get my three scores. I always love surfing with just one other girl in the water, as you can do your job out there. You can get whatever wave you want if you have priority.

"I've had a really nice break and was just surfing a lot," she said of the off-season. "Staying at home as been nice. I'm ready for the rest of the tour. I'm just going to focus and try and do really well this year."

Current world number four Maria 'Tita' Tavares defeated fellow Brazilian Jacqueline Silva in a nail biting heat. Tavares, 25, held a comfortable lead throughout, but with Silva top scoring on a 7-point ride toward the end, she jumped back into contention and only needed a 2.0 to win. Unfortunately her
final wave was too fast, racing down the line without her.

"The waves are fun, but they're very small, so I sat on the inside,"
explained Tavares. "Jacqueline stayed for more on the outside, but they closed out too fast. I looked for three open-faced waves, but then Jacqueline found that 7-point ride and then only needed a 2. I was so lucky.

"It's my first time (to Fiji) and the Island is so beautiful," she added. "I can't believe I'm staying here. It's been my dream for such a long time."

World number five and current World Qualifying Series (WQS) leader Melanie Redman outscored fellow Australian Lynnette MacKenzie in their opening heat. Redman, 25, has dominated the WQS this year with two wins in Australia already, and today made the most of tricky conditions to start her WCT campaign as hoped.

"There were some really nice waves, but we're not used to surfing in such perfectly glassy conditions, and it's difficult to judge the waves," reasoned Redman. "It's hard to tell if you should be waiting for a tube or doing a turn. I was making a lot of mistakes out there, and I think Lynn was as well. I saw her looking as frustrated as I was.

"It's not big enough to connect all the way through, it's just sectioning off," she continued. "You can only fit in one or two turns and we'd like to be doing surf re-entries all the way, or getting barreled and doing some turns. That's what we pictured before we came, so hopefully a bit more swell arrives."

A 6:30am (local time) call will be made each morning to decide the day's
schedule.
