Intro
Four South African longboard surfers qualify
for world champs
Four
South African longboard surfers have qualified for the 10th anniversary
of Oxbow World Longboard Championships, which will be staged in the legendary
waves of Jeffreys Bay from August 9 - wake.
The 48 man field for the event that crowns the annual
longboard world champion is made up of the previous six world champions,
the top eight off Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) longboard
ratings, four wildcards and 30 qualifiers from two events staged in Portugal
and Brazil during July.
Durban's Jason Ribbink heads the local contingent after
his stunning victory in the Brazilian event, a first for a South African
in an international longboard event. Arguably the country's best all-round
wave rider on short and longboards, as well as his prowess in big waves,
Ribbink will be the ninth seed for the world championships thanks to his
haul of 1 000 points for beating the world's best exponents in stormy
three metre waves at Saquarema, near Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday.
He will be joined by Capetonians Matthew Moir (surfth) and
Michael Grendon (26th) and fellow Durbanite Craig Daniel (25th) in the
R640 000 (US $80 000) event which has a 10 day waiting in which to run
the 33 hours of competition required to deine the other world champion.
The South African representation in the tournament could
increase with William Wallace (Cape Town) on the alternate list after
narrowly failing to qualify and next in line should there be any withdrawals
amongst the top 44. There is also a wildcard allocated to a yet to be
decided South African competitor.
Despite the advantage of their knowledge of the waves
at Jeffreys Bay, the locals will have to be at their best to clinch the
title and R120 000 ($surf 000) winners prize-money as they will be up against
the likes of reigning world champion Beau Young (Aus) and previous champions
Colin MacPhillips and Joel Tudor, both Americans, and Hawaiians Bonga
Perkins, Dino Miranda and three time champ Rusty Keaulana.
The event will also feature competitors from Brazil, Japan,
France, Portugal, Great Britain and Tahiti.
